PCL based nanofiber meshes containing embedded Mg metal particles were successfully prepared by electrospinning. The meshes with Mg showed good morphological uniformity and structural integrity, release of Mg~(2+) in physiological solutions, no cytotoxicity in vitro and were well tolerated when implanted in vivo. In vivo, implanted Mg metal containing meshes supported phenomena that suggested increased repair and more rapid tissue healing, suggesting that the Mg mitigated the foreign body responses to PCL. Thus, metal containing composite nanofiber meshes have promise for improving tissue healing in peripheral nerve and other soft tissue repair applications.
