We have described a method for reducing the complexity of secretome analysis, identifying a series of cytokines that positively or negatively impact HSC fate. Functional analysis shows enrichment of niche-related activity. This work provides insight into how synergies between biomaterial design and soluble factors drive stem cell response. Ongoing work is adding identified cytokines into HSC biomaterial platforms to evaluate individual and combinatorial effects on HSC differentiation vs. quiescence.
