摘要

Using multiple diagnostic modalities, we demonstrate an animal model for the investigation of new methods for the prevention of extravasation of bone cement during vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty. Additionally, we speculate that the diffuse SIRS-like pulmonary lesions may be due to transient monomer toxicity. The systemic release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, lipid and vasoactive mediators induces endothelial damage and microvascular thrombosis, potentially culminating in disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), both of which have been reported in the clinical literature in association with PMMA toxicity. We are currently developing a monomer assay to further study our findings in this swine model.
