Tidal flow constructed wetlands (TFCWs) have recently been studied as a sustainable technology to achieve enhanced carbon and nitrogen removal. For the widespread application of this relatively new technology it is required a comprehensive understanding of the chemical and biological processes within the system for further optimization. In this study we studied the COD, suspended solids, nitrogen removal in a pilot-scale TFCW, under various loading and operating conditions. The system effectively removed COD, TSS, below Class A water reuse standards. Nitrification was achieved in the system under different loading conditions and operational strategies with an average efficiency of 93± 8%. Total nitrogen removal of above 66% was observed in the system when operating with 4 cycles a day and different nitrogen loading. Microbial population analysis was performed using qPCR, and the results indicate that ammonia oxidizing, nitrate oxidizing bacteria, and comammox are all involved and contribute to the nitrogen transformation within the TFCWs.
