Robotic Rehabilitation Therapy in Chihuahua Mexico, Challenges from Translating a Clinical Research Protocol to Clinical Practice

The incidence of stroke in developing countries is on the increase. A high percentage of the surviving patients is left with a permanent disability that without the right access to rehabilitation treatments can leave them with very limited independence. In Mexico a large part of the population (> 60%) depends on public health services due to economic limitations, and only very few have private medical insurance. Stroke patients need intensive therapy for long periods of time. Public healthcare systems are saturated limiting the access to the needed therapy. Robotic Rehabilitation offers an affordable solution if developed within the country. Access to expensive robotic rehabilitation from developed countries might not be an adequate solution. We present the experiences of Chihuahua Mexico of our Robotic Gym from research protocol to clinical practice.
