The investigation area (the Singen basin) is situated near the northwestern border of Lake Constance in southern Germany. It consists of a multilayered, porous aquifer system in Quaternary sediments with hydraulic contact to an underlying karst aquifer system. The system is an important resource for drinking water. Because the surface is mainly covered by industrial and urban areas, the quantity and quality of groundwater have been affected by anthropogenic contaminant inputs for several decades.
