Abstract: In 1995 the UK Defence Evaluation and Research Agencyconducted a series of pilotage field of view (FOV)trials on a Lynx helicopter. These were performed underthe auspices of the Technical Cooperation Program,subgroup H, Technical Panel 6. Before the commencementof the trials it was clear that it would be necessaryto have available an objective method of determiningnot only the accuracy with which the various trialmission task elements would be flown, but also therelevance of the flying accuracy to the operationalapplication. Such an objective method was not known toexist, therefore a suitable technique was derived, anddeliberately tailored to give some read-across to thewidely accepted subjective Cooper-Harper handlingqualities rating. The derivation, application andusefulness of the composite objective rating techniqueare described herein, together with a synopsis of thetrials themselves. The paper concludes with a summaryof the trials results to date, which indicate arelationship between both objectively- andsubjectively-gathered data concerning the flyingperformance, and the FOV of the evaluation pilot. !12
