In this paper, a study of the correlation dimension in gearbox condition monitoring is presented. The correlation dimension, a concept from the chaos and fractal dynamics theory, can be used to characterize the properly of reconstructed systcm phase space quantitatively. A thnce-step analysis method using correlation dimension is presented: (1) Firstly, the original measured signals are preprocessed using nonlinear system noise-reduction methods; (2) Reconstruct underlying system state space based on the nonlinear system reconstruction theory; (3) Calculate the correlation dimension using GP algorithm. The measured industrial gearbox vibration signals are analyzed using above method. The results show that the different running states such as normal, with a cracked tooth and with a broken tooth can be classified clearly using the correlation dimension.
