Even though there has been an interest in employing pacemaker therapy for gastro-intestinal (GI) motor dysfunction for about 40 years, GI electrical stimulation is yet to move beyond laboratory experimentation. Electrical stimulation in the colon to restore micturition and defecation and in the stomach for treatment of gastroparesis currently hold promise of rapid translation to clinical therapy. Small bowel electrical stimulation is still very experimental.
