OPERATIONAL REMOTE SENSING IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE SWISSAIR FLIGHT 111 TRAGEDY

Following the tragic crash of Swissair flight 111 into the waters of the Atlantic Ocean near Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, Environment Canada dispatched their two remote sensing aircraft to aid response crews and help trace the final moments of the doomed aircraft. Environment Canada's two remote sensing aircraft; DC-3 C-GRSB and Convair 580 C-GRSC were on scene shortly after the crash of flight 111, collecting remotely sensed data and providing operational command centres with concise information from the daily overflights. The Convair 580 with its two synthetic aperture radars (SARs) collected data and provided real-time imagery in the form of dry silver transparencies. With it's all weather capability, the Convair 580 SAR facility was able to image large areas of the ocean and adjacent shoreline to look for debris fields that may have been present following the crash of flight 111. The DC-3 served a variety of roles including; operating as a low level platform for the visual observation of surface and sub-surface debris, the collection of high-resolution large format colour visible and false colour infrared photographs and the collection of laser-induced fluorescence spectra. The fluorescence spectral data were collected with the Laser Environmental Airborne Fluorosensor (LEAF) above the ocean and surrounding coastal environment. Missions were flown to search for traces of petroleum oils, lubricating fluids and aircraft fuel.
