Humidity sensitivity of conducting/insulating polymer composites has been studied. The composites were prepared with various conducting and insulating polymers. The conductivity of poly(o-phenylenediamine) /poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) was linearly related with the atmospheric humidity. Two types of water molecules were found to exist in these polymers. One is weakly bound to the composite and equilibriates with the atmospheric moisture, and the other is strongly bound to the composite at the PVA unit and stays there even in a dry state. These composites senses the humidity following the scheme that the protonic acid doped in the conducting polymer move reversibly between the conducting and insulating polymers in proportional to the environmental humidity. On the other hand, the conductivity of poly(o-toluidine)/ PVA showed non-linear dependence on humidity and a hysteresis in the measurements. These results are caused by lesser amount of strongly bound water molecules, which does not permit the protonic acid to move reversibly between the two polymers.
