In the past thirty years, the concept of the minimill for the production of flat and long products has changed at a very fast pace. Increase in furnace productivity and lower production costs through new melting, casting and rolling technologies have made the economics more attractive for steelmakers. Today it is common to have minimills with capacities before only heard of with the BF-BOF route, capacities from 1.5 to 2 million tons per year are common utilizing no more than two EAF as melting units. Every day EAF based steelmakers are producing steel grades economically competitive before reserved for the BF-BOF route. In order to produce high quality steel grades, EAF based steelmakers are using high quality metallic charge coming from iron ore like DRI, HBI or pig iron. For the production of high quality steel grades, virgin iron units are the main metallic charge and can only be complemented with scrap in limited quantities due to quality restrictions. In the past, availability of DRI/HBI has been limited because most of their production was for self-consumption. As new minimills for flat products are becoming operative, production of merchant DRI/HBI has been increased in order to satisfy the need for high quality metallic charge.
