摘要

Fine spatial and spectral resolution satellites are an outgrowth of Earth observing systems that had their beginnings in the 1960s and 70s. The evolution of these systems is marked by technological challenges that continue with the development of the next generation of high resolution sensors and platforms. Tradeoffs between spatial, spectral, radiometric and temporal resolution are inevitable. The on-line and pending commercial systems have adopted a high spatial resolution approach. Several experimental Earth observing systems have hyperspectral capabilities but have sacrificed spatial resolution. Both approaches represent legitimate alternatives and necessary compromises. This paper discusses the implications of recent changes in commercial and public satellite systems and draws several conclusions regarding the direction and future of fine spatial and spectral resolution satellites in the first quarter of the 21~(st) Century.
