摘要

There are three very important objectives that Japan must strive to attain all at the same time: (1) securing a stable source of energy, (2) environmental protection, and (3) economic growth. Key to this is the development and promotion of clean coal technology as a measure to reduce the damage to the environment resulting from the use of coal. In December 1999, Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry prepared a report in which is was concluded that coal-related technology is of strategic importance as the world heads into the 21st century, particularly clean coal technology.
