A numerical model for one-dimensional consolidation is proposed based on some microscopic consideration in particle size. In the proposed model, the volume change in pore water due to the dissipation of excess pore water pressure is calcualted as the primary consolidation behavior by the numerical model for voids. The numerical experiment is carried out out to investigate the one dimensional consolidation behavior by the numerical model. On the other hand the one dimensional consolidation test on volcanic ash clay is carried out by the separate type's oedometer testign apparatus, which is manufactured in our laboratory. The distribution of excess pore water pressure in the specimen and its change with time are investigated. The test results are used to examine the validity of proposed model by comparing the numerical results with those of oedometer test.
