Information technology and risk perception in Swedish society

The information technology (IT) is constantly undergoing changes and new developments, and the Internet and electronic mail (e-mail) are made available to an ever increasing number of people. The present paper looks into the risk perception of the Swedish population regarding the new technology, and in particular the applications of e-mail and the Internet. The results of an extensive empirical study, based on a survey sent out to a large representative sample of the Swedish population during the spring of 1999, are reported. Results showed that the overall attitude towards information technology was very positive and the risks related to the technology were perceived as rather small. Throughout, personal risks were perceived as lower than general risks. The most pertinent factor in explaining the variance in attitudes towards the use of the Internet and e-mail was computer interest and attitude. Experience also played an important role in explaining the variance in attitude towards IT.
