Video films are particularly suitable as a way of experiencing the world because they provide a dynamic, although vicarious, encounter through sound and vision. However, the use of video films in their present, mostly passive, form, do not succeed in contributing enough to the learning process. SYNOPSUS was designed to cause a shift from the passive "learning-by-viewing" model to the "learning-by-doing" model while studying with educational films. By utilizing a simple user-friendly interface, the tool allows students to engage, on a computer, in active, reflective, and interactive learning with existing video films. The tool and some preliminary results of an evaluation study will be presented.
