Autograft of Cryopreserved Cranial Bone Flap --Animal Model and Clinical Study

The purpose of this study was establish the technique of cryopreservation of cranial bone flaps for autografts. Eighteen Newzealand white rabbits were used as animal model. Cryopreserved flap was implanted back to the same animal after being thawed. According to the animal results, the cranial bone flap of patient suffering from craniocerebral trauma during decompression was cryo-preserved with the same method and placed back after the edima disappeaed. Total 31 patients undergoing the autograft of Cryopreserved cranial bone flaps. The flaps were Cryopreserved from 79 to 510 days (average 215 days). No rejection and inflammation occurred in any patient, dropsy occurred in 2 patients and disappeared after tapping and compression bandage treatment. By X-ray and CT examination, slight bone absorption occurred in the edge area of the flap after 1~2 months. After 4~6 months, the spatium became narrow, synostosis took place in most of the flap areas after 12 months. X-ray and ECT examination showing that the synostosis is excellent. In conclusion, based on animal study, we successfully Cryopreserved human cranial bone flaps for autograft, and the clinical outcome has been satisfactory. Cryopreservation of skull flap has no rejection occurs in patient after autograft. Psychologically, it is easier for the patient to accept this approach than any other articial materials as grafts. This method benefits the all patients and transplantation can be performed in schedule.
