FUNCTIONAL DESIGN OF A LIGHTWEIGHT BODY-IN-WHITE TAKING THE NEW BMW GENERATION AS AN EXAMPLE HOW TO DETERMINE 'BODY IN WHITE' MATERIALS ACCORDING TO STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS
Lightweight design and weight reduction can not always be measured in kilograms, but have to be seen in relation to the achieved functionality and vehicle dimensions. Taking the main functions of the body shell and the targets as defined for it by BMW, the specific lightweight design quality factor L is developed. Its implementation is demonstrated taking the new BMW generation (E38-1994 / E39-1995 / E46-1998) as an example.
