End-to-end tests are well suited to thoroughly investigate the function and performance of communication aided protection schemes. Well-coordinated tasks have to be carried out on both ends of the transmission system, which are usually separated by long distances. Using GPS as the time reference provides time synchronization. Conventionally, local operators perform the coordinated operation of the test equipment at both ends. This procedure is very troublesome, time consuming and prone to errors. Remote control provides control over all test systems involved from one place. Protection test systems that integrate GPS simplify the use of these technologies. Test sets that are controlled by PC software are open to remote control. Test plans prepared in advance allow the automatic execution of tests, the exact repetition and the reuse of procedures. Practical experiences from end-to-end tests using such equipment and methods prove the high effectiveness of these tests.
