The purpose of this paper is to share the benefits of the author's experience gained throughher contribution to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) financed and CanadianSociety for Civil Engineering (CSCE) managed Fergana Valley Peace Building Water ManagementProject. The author's roles in the project were to assist in the training of water committees in selectedvillages in the Fergana Valley, to learn facilitation and mobilization skills, and to share the experience withother engineers. The author travelled to Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to work for two weeks with anexperienced community development facilitator and with local people who are striving to better theircommunities. The author learned and observed a great deal, both personally and professionally, aboutdifferences in cultures and about the skills needed to address the social aspect of engineeringimplementation.
