The glacial clays at Cowden comprise dense well packed tills of Devensian age. The tills are of low plasticity, overconsolidated with K_o values around 1 through much of the profile. The test site has been extensively investigated using a wide range of sampling, in situ and laboratory techniques. The paper describes the information gathered and compares the results of the various techniques used. The site has also been used for assessing full-scale performance of various pile types and techniques, model shallow foundations as well coastal cliff stability.
