Microsystem technology is characterised by a blend of established and new products. The established products include read/write heads for hard disk drives, printheads for inkJet printers, acceleration and pressure sensors in addition to intelligent heart pacemakers and hearing aids. New products on the verge of market launch include MST for microfluidics, optics and RF MEMS. What market opportunities exist for new MST products? Using the example of RF MEMS and microfluidics, we show how MST products enter the market and which difficulties can be expected. According to the NEXUS market study, both of these fields are among the fastest growing and fastest selling of the new MST products.
