The finite element simulation of LSP induced surfacemodifications (residual stresses and deformations,bending effect on thin targets), is of primaryimportance to predict accurate LSP conditions for agiven application. We have carried out suchsimulations with the use of RADIOSS TM andABAQUS TM commercial softwares, mainly onTi6Al4V titanium alloys and 7150 aluminum foraeronautical applications, and various kind of steels.Mostly, FEM simulations are shown to provide arather good agreement with experimental data, and toreproduce precisely the residual stress fields and / orbending effects induced by LSP, for one or a largenumber of local impacts. Last, a thermo-mechanicalsimulation was carried out successfully to reproducethe effects of a LSP treatment without protectiveoverlay [2].
