Research was carried out in order to investigate the effect of the organic loading rate onthe performance of an up-flow anaerobic/aerobic fixed-bed (UA/AFB) combined reactor. One bench scaleUA/AFB combined reactor was constructed to investigate the treatment of high strength wastewater.Reactor was based on the combination of anaerobic and aerobic parts only in a single reactor. It wasoperated under four different runs in witch organic loads were 0.8, 2.3, 4.7 and 7.6 Kg COD/ m3.d,respectively. It was found that the total HRT 9 h (5 h as anaerobic and 4 h as aerobic) is long enough toobtain efficient removal of COD more than 95 percent at all of runs. Also, investigated reactor showed highability to control organic loads.Based on the observed results, the use of UA/AFB reactor in practice seems to be a potentialbiotechnology for treatment of industrial wastewater contain high organic load.
