The Sheikh Zayed Bridge is a novel arch bridge over Maqta Channel, linking AbuDhabi Island to the main land. The extraordinary shape of the asymmetric arches was chosen bythe architect to symbolise the dune hills in deserts and the wide splays on the Abu Dhabi sideform the gate to the island city. The complex architectural form and the harsh environmentrequired the selection of a special structural system. The bridge has an overall length of 845m andincludes three arches with the main arch having a span of 234m and providing a 16m highnavigation clearance. The arches are post-tensioned concrete boxes up to the deck level andcontinue as steel boxes above the bridge deck. Each of the two separate carriageways consists offour traffic lanes, two shoulders and a sidewalk. The bridge decks are 24m wide post-tensionedconcrete multi-cellular boxes. This paper describes the design criteria and critical detailed designconsiderations.
