Processing of Nb-microalloyed HSLA Steels in CSP Facilities

The paper describes the thermomechanical processing of Nb based HSLA steels in CSP facilities. Special attention is paid to CSP hot strip from structural and pipe steels. Microalloying plays an outstanding role in the production of high-strength hot strip. It is vital to thermomechanical processing (TMP). Using both an appropriate microalloying design and suitable process parameters, the resulting microstructure and consequently the physical properties are modified substantially. It is shown that the applied processing strategy brings about an intense grain refinement, an increase of strength by setting bainitic microstructure, and additional strengthening by precipitation hardening. As a result, Nb-microalloyed CSP hot strip exhibits an excellent combination of high strength, ductility and tougnness. The significant material improvement is a sound basis for the successful utilization of the manufactered hot strip. Nb-microalloyed CSP hot strips are broadly commercialized; they find multiple applications; examples in construction and pipe production are described.
