The composition of a limited hardenability steel is designed by means of Grossmann's method. The depth of the hardened layer is designed as 3.5~4.0 mm. In order to obtain penetrate heating of bearing rings and suitable dissolving of carbides, medium frequency induction heating is applied with a definite time period. After quenching and tempering, the microstructures, stress distribution, martensite carbon content and contact fatigue behavior of the bearing rings are measured. Experiments show the contact fatigue behavior of bearings of limited hardenability steel is much higher than the Railway Ministration Standard, and the temperature difference before and after test is much lower than the standard. Theory analysis reveals the factors to strengthen the fatigue behavior of the new steel.
