Microstructure and properties of low silicon C-Mn-Si-Al-P TRIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity ) steels were studied. The investigated steels were designed with different carbon contents, with or without microalloy element Ti/V. Tensile test and Erichsen test of the investigated steels showed an excellent combination of mechanical property and ductility, with tensile strength between 800MPa and 1000MPa, total elongation of around 20%, and a quite good formability with a dome height of 10mm or so in all cases. Using CO_2 laser welding method, the mechanical properties and formability of laser welds of these micro-alloyed TRIP steels were studied. The ultimate tensile strength and hardness in every position in the laser welds increased with the increase of overall carbon content while the total elongation decreased oppositely. Properties of the laser-welds became worse with the increase of carbon content. All the laser welds were free of cracks and other defeats. The investigated steels showed fairly good welding ability.
