The effect of RE (rare earth) on improving the atmospheric corrosion resistance of steel has been investigated by cycle immersion corrosion test, saline water droplet test, corrosion production micro-analysis and electrochemical test. The potential-pH diagram of RE-H_2O was also used to investigate the chemical stability of various kinds of RE compounds. The results of saline water droplet test and polarization experiments showed that oxide or hydrate of RE deposited in the cathodal area where the pH value was relatively high and inhibited the corrosion of steel by blocking the transmission of O_2 and electron to the cathodal area. The potential-pH diagram showed the compound of Ce was more stable than compound of La in the acid solution and suggested that the ability of inhibiting corrosion of Ce is better than that of La.
