In Russia, more than 10% of the products of the machine building industry are applied in Arctic environment, where temperatures below -40°C are common. This specifically applies to off-road vehicles, trucks and equipment needed for the mining industry. Traditional high strength steels or imported steels often do not have sufficient strength (needed for weight reduction) or toughness, or weldability. Therefore new steel grades have been developed based on the following principles: ①relatively low carbon content to improve low temperature toughness and weldability; ②high cleanliness achieved by reducing harmful non-metallic inclusions during an optimized steelmaking process; ③microalloying with niobium for grain refinement; ④using heat treatment operations quenching plus tempering; ⑤use naturally-alloyed pig-iron (made from chromium and nickel containing iron ores) in order to save expensive alloying elements.Two different high strength steel grades have been developed and are applied in the truck industry, guaranteeing the following properties: yield strength ≥ 690 or ≥ 1000 MPa; tensile strength ≥ 790 or ≥ 1100 MPa; elongation (δ5) ≥ 16 or ≥ 11 %; CVN toughness ≥ 50 (at -70°C) or ≥ 40 J/cm~2 (at -40°C).
