The effect of Zr on the toughness of HAZ for ultra high strength low carbon steel has been investigated in the experiment. The research results show that Zr can improve the toughness of HAZ obviously, and the toughness can keep a higher level even at 100KJ/cm welding heat input. This phenomenon can be explained by the role of Zr as following: 1) ZrO_2+MnS compound is formed with nuclei of ZrO_2, and MDZ formation improves the IGF nucleation. 2) The austenite grain is divided by the IGF and the microstructure is refined, which improves the impact toughness in the CGHAZ. And most probably 3 ) ZrO_2+TiN compound can be formed with nuclei of ZrO_2 in the processing and may hinder grain growth in the CGHAZ.
