Isothermal austenite grain growth has been in-situ observed employing laser scanning confocal microscopy. It was shown that the growth of austenite proceeds via the motion of grain boundaries. A shrinking grain was directly observed, while most small grain sizes change slowly. The effects of thermal grooving, manganese segregation and triple junctions on the migration of grain boundaries were analyzed in great detail. It was found that all these three factors exert retarding effects on the grain boundary, leading to a sluggish growth rate of austenite upon annealing.
