This paper describes the kinematic principle and the structural characteristics of the double crank ring-plate-type pin-cycloid-gear planetary drive we originally presented. First the tooth profile modification of the cycloid gear is determined through an optimization method. Then based on the optimized tooth profile and an accurate force-analysis, a model of parameter optimization for maximizing the rated torque of the drive with eleven constrains is established. In addition, the shape of the ring plate, the main part in the reducer, has been optimally designed to reduce its weight and its vibration when operating. According to theoretical calculation and testing results, with the same diameter of the pin center circle and with similar transmission ratio, the load-carrying capacity of the optimized double crank two-ring-plate-type pin-cycloid-gear planetary drive is one time more than that of a traditional cycloid reducer and a four-ring-plate-type drive is three times more than that of a traditional one. The outstanding advantages of the new drive have been proved both by theoretical calculation and by testing results.
