摘要

The use of process additives as speciality chemicals in order to achieve improved processability of rubber compounds is not new. Many products used today are based on simple metal salts, for example zinc salts of aliphatic fatty acids, which are widely used for Natural rubber and blends with synthetic polymers. Other products are based on fatty acids or their derivatives. Whilst there are undoubtedly benefits in their use there are also some drawbacks. Some cure systems such as peroxide based crosslinking are adversely affected. Many additives are unsuited to use in high temperature processing such as injection moulding. The service requirements of some compounds developed for under bonnet applications are increasingly extreme. Process additives may limit the ability to meet some more severe specifications.Newer generation additives are however available which may be incorporated into high sensitivity compounds, for example halogenated or acrylate containing material. This paper examines some of the drawbacks and highlights the advantages that may be gained by careful process additive selection.
