Origins of thermal and mechanical properties of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan with inter-and intra-hydrogen bonds were investigated systematically by using DSC,X-ray and visco-elastic measurements. Based on their individual properties, characteristics of the blend films were discussed in relation to morphology and mechanical properties as a function of different chitosan contents. These results suggested that the miscibility of PVA and chitosan achieves by the entanglements of the amorphous chain segments of PVA and chitosan. By the elongation, the miscibility became worse and the chitosan content on the film surface was higher than that of the inner part of the specimen. In spite of unusual phenomena leading to an increase in chitosan content, sufficient entanglement meshes between chitosan and PVA amorphous chains were maintained and then the drawn blend films were transparent and the elongation could be achieved without any peering. The biodegradation of PVA and chitosan composites was significantly dependent on the composition of chitosan. Increase in content of chitosan made a faster degradation in both case of paddy soil and red soil.
