Motivated by applications in optical communication, an M-ary hypothesis testing problem associated with a marked and filtered Poisson process in white Gaussian noise is discussed. Two formal solutions for the hypothesis testing problem are obtained. Under different assumptions, nonlinear filters with different levels of complexity are developed to approximate the formal solutions.
