摘要

Like many Canadian cities, the New Brunswick cities of Fredericton and Moncton currently use paper forms to manage their concrete quality control information. Potential areas of improvement with this approach include standardizing the information recorded, avoiding duplicated information, preventing error-prone data re-entry, limiting time-consuming data transfer, and enabling retrieval of specific information. Previous research has suggested that using an automated workflow with electronic forms could greatly increase the efficiency of the concrete quality control process in the construction industry. The goal of this project was to model a web-based workflow for the concrete quality control information at the City of Fredericton and the City of Moncton Engineering and Public Works departments. The project was carried out as a case study over the summer of 2006. Electronic forms were created in order to capture the data related to concrete quality control. Site visits were made to record the concrete information in electronic forms and to initiate the automated process. The current (paper-based) process was simultaneously used. A comparison was carried out and identified differences between the paperbased and automated processes. Feedback was solicited from the participants. They all agreed that the transition phase would be the largest obstacle, but the advantages were very clear: consistency of the data (as it is recorded), archives, accountability (predefining the workflow clearly states everyone’s responsibility ahead of time), visibility (people can see where the process is being bottlenecked), and the ability to share information easily. There are other suspected benefits that will not be recognized until such a method is utilized.
