Leaching Behavior of Acid Coal Mine Waste and Sulfur-Control Measures

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is the result of the natural oxidation of sulphide minerals (FeS2) in coal-mining wastes, when exposed to the combined action of water and oxygen. It is considered as the worst environmental problem associated with mining activities owing to low pH and high concentrations of heavy metals and other toxic elements. Experiment showed acid environment occurred with the oxidation of high-sulfur coal mining waste, which solubilized heavy metals present in the waste material, thus making them readily available to water, soil and biota. Traditional AMD treatment including alkaline material neutralization, engineered wetlands has well effect, but not be controlled from source. Some effective AMD prevention techniques were brought out, such as bactericides method, surface passivation treatment, and organic material cover treatment, aiming at eliminating oxygen diffusion and precipitate infiltration into the sulphides mass.
