With servo-testing machine, the experimental tests for siltstone of coal seam roof were carried out under Brazilian splitting tests, uniaxial compression tests, triaxial compression tests and triaxial tests with confining pressure reduction. Deformation and strength characteristics of siltstone under different stress states were analyzed. The experimental results demonstrate that, the characteristic of mineral grain of siltstone is more obvious. The deformation characteristic of siltstone samples while they are loaded and unloaded is more different from each other and the character has relationship with loading history. Average elastic modulus of siltstone samples while they were firstly unloaded or secondly loaded may illustrates the relationship between their stress and strain. The modulus that is affected a little by rock samples and experimental conditions has more obvious mechanical meaning. The ratio of tensile strength to compressive strength for siltstone samples is 1:18.9 which belongs to typical brittle rock, but it has a definite plasticity under higher confining pressure. Yield point elongation appears in the peak value position of stress-strain curve for siltstone samples. It is regressive strength parameters of siltstone rock samples in respective triaxial compression tests and triaxial tests with confining pressure reduction that are approximately identical with their regressive strength parameters in above two type tests united. Therefore, the angles of internal friction and cohesion of rock, which indicate material mechanical properties and have no relationship with loaded way of rock samples, are mechanical parameters of rock material.
