Multi-spectroscopic Study of Green Quartzite (Guizhou Jade) from the Qinglong Antimony Deposit,Guizhou Province, China

Green quartzlte (also known as "Guizhou Jade") from the Qinglong antimony deposit, Guizhou, China, has been investigated by petrographic observations, trace element analyses, and multi-spectroscopic techniques. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns and infrared absorption and reflectance spectra confirm petrographic observations that the green quartzite is comprised of predominantly microcrystalline quartz and minor a mounts of dickite. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric analyses reveal Cr and V contents up to 78 and 107 ppm, respectively. Optical absorption spectra are composed of two broad bands centered at ~412 nm and ~571 nm, indicative of Cr3+ and V3+ ions in octahedral coordination. Identification of a VO2+ center and two Cr3+ centers by electron paramagnetic resonance spectra confirms the presence of V and Cr in dickite. Therefore, Cr3+ and V5+ ions in octahedral sites in dickite are responsible for the green color of Guizhou Jade, which is not affected by a two-year-long exposure to sunlight.
