Perturbation on the Simplex: Describing and Modeling Compositional Changes of Sediments and Rocks

Compositional changes displayed as "trends" in ternary diagrams are frequently used in earth sciences to describe and analyze die influence of certain processes on the composition of rocks, minerals, or sediments. Most of these trend lines are intuitive and the variables are reduced and/or amalgamated to three for easy graphical presentation in ternary diagrams. Perturbation on the d-dimensional simplex is an operation that allows for numerically describing such changes in d-part compositions. Compositional linear trends, based on perturbation and powering, can be used to analyze and model linear processes (or processes that can be reasonably approximated by a linear function). More complex trends that cannot be explained by a single-process model may be analyzed by superposing processes operating simultaneously or consecutively. The potential benefits of the approach are illustrated by examples related to the generation and/or alteration of sediments, using literature data on sediment geochemistry, petrography, and grain size.
