Performance of the Static Smoke Exhaust System with Low Pressure Drop across the Vent in Atria

For a static smoke exhaust system, buoyancy of the smoke layer is the driving force for smoke removal. However, because of the large volume space, conditions of having 'near-zero' pressure drop across a horizontal ceiling vent might be often encountered. Under these conditions, the traditional vent flow model might not be suitable for describing the vent flow, bidirectional across the horizontal vent might be resulted. The smoke exhaust efficiency might greatly decrease once this occurs. Performance of the static smoke exhaust system with low pressure drop across the vent will be investigated in this paper. The critical pressure difference and the related critical smoke layer thickness would be deduced for preventing the bidirectional flow occurring. The net mass exhaust rate would be also derived for the bi-directional flow. These results should be useful for determining the opening time of the static smoke exhaust system or justifying whether the mechanic smoke system is needed for an atrium fire.
