In an increasingly complex and volatile business environment, innovation is arguably critical to the viability of organizations. In transitional economies, however, formal market institutions have not been well developed to govern market transactions and define and protect property rights. Without the protection of intellectual property rights, it may discourage technology-based firms from allocating resources to research and development ( R&D). Using threat-rigidity theory, we examine the relationship between perceived dysfunctional competition and R&D intensity. In a mail survey of 66 technology-based firms, results showed that perceived dysfunctional competition was positively related to R&D intensity, as opposed to our hypothesized negative relationship. Implication for practices was discussed.
