Teaching and learning at almost all levels of education, from elementary school to high schoolto university, invariably includes assignments and other types of term work that are considered necessaryto enhance the student learning experience. This is certainly true in engineering education. Typically,assignments are submitted for grading purposes and a certain percentage of the final course mark that isassessed for a student is based on term work. However, it is postulated herein that term work grades arenot necessarily reliable indicators of individual student performance, which thus raises the question as towhether they should be considered in the assessment of a student?s final course mark. The discoursepresented herein is intended to provoke consideration of this matter and to briefly raise related matters ofstudent assessment in engineering education. Perhaps with a revamped focus on assessment in generaland of term work in particular, it may be possible to enhance learning and related performance outcomes.
