The Hebron oil production platform will be designed as a concrete Gravity Base Structure(GBS) and is likely to be constructed in Bull Arm, Trinity Bay Newfoundland. It will be towed 350 kmsoutheast of St, John’s, Newfoundland, to the Grand Banks and will be placed in 95 meters of water. TheGBS will need to withstand severe environmental conditions, extreme sea loads exceeding 20m, andpotential collisions with icebergs which may surpass 6 million tonnes. These and other critical demandson the Hebron GBS necessitate the design of a High Performance Concrete (HPC) that can be efficientlyproduced to obtain the required strength, durability, and constructability.A review of projects found in the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea provide insight into the desireddesign parameters of a HPC suitable for the Hebron project. Since there is no generally acceptedmethod available for designing a HPC mixture, an extensive set of trial mixes and laboratory tests arerequired. This paper uses A?tcin’s method to arrive at a potential preliminary trial mix.
