The construction industry generates a large amount of waste. The building sector accounts forhalf of this waste stream, and studies show that design decisions are responsible for a substantial portionof this. The aim of this research is to develop a guidance tool based on design assessment that willfacilitate waste minimisation over a building’s life cycle. Grounded in a literature review and a focus groupsession, the research identified design criteria aimed at waste minimisation as well as the preferredapproach to assessing designs regarding this issue. A prototype based on 16 design criteria to beassessed in workshops following a methodology integrated into the design process was developed. Theprototype assesses the level to which strategies implemented at the schematic design stage as well asthe design’s achieved performance at concept development satisfy the waste minimisation targetsdefined at the programming stage. The next step is to validate the prototype on a project underdevelopment.
