摘要

Globalization (or globalisation) is a term used to describe the changes in societies and theworld economy that result primarily from dramatically increased trade and cultural exchange.Globalization is one of the most powerful forces of the early 21st century, yet the complex phenomenon ofglobalization and its impact on engineering practice are not well understood. Recent trends towardsgreater globalization of the engineering profession are the result of changes in technology, engineeringpractice, socio-political policies, and forms of corporate organization. It already has resulted in increasedinternational mobility of engineering professionals, increased prominence in engineering practice of largetransnational engineering firms, and greater competition across international boundaries for engineeringwork. The paper highlights the need for the Canadian civil engineering profession to become more awareand responsive to changes arising from globalization that affect the strength of the profession and thewell being of its practitioners.
