Nothing speaks more boldly of an engineer’s desire for self-improvement than a wellstructuredportfolio of on-going professional development activities. Lifelong learning is an essentialprocess whereby the practicing engineer is proactive: seeking out learning opportunities throughouthis/her entire career, gaining additional knowledge and skills, and not just to meet mandatory licensingrequirements.To ensure full potential for lifetime employability and mobility, and to be credible, ethical and competent,continually upgrading knowledge and skills to maintain high levels of competence is essential. This shouldbe ingrained into an engineer’s code of ethics. Furthermore, s/he must keep pace with rapidly changingenvironments and public expectations. Most engineers lack formal training in current issues such asclimate change, infrastructure renewal, environment and sustainable development. Demonstratingcontinual competency fulfills increasing demands from the public for greater accountability and is in theinterest of public safety.Lifelong learning is critically important for a practicing engineer.
