Wetlands occupy 14% of the Canadian landscape and yield non-negligible influence onhydrological source distribution, water quality and quantity, climate change as well as wildlife habitats.Recently, it has been reported that the temperature and the precipitation of arctic area had beenincreasing sharply. To gain insight of the interaction between hydrology and atmosphere of arctic andsub-arctic wetlands, extensive field investigation was conducted in the Deer River watershed nearChurchill, Manitoba during summers of 2006 and 2007. Results indicate that summer air temperature andprecipitation were increasing in the past two years and the 30-year historical data also demonstrates theelevation trends. Other evidence that shows a warming climate in the study watershed was alsoobserved. For example, summer frost table was significantly shallower in 2007 than that of 2006 with anincremental distribution as approaching the river bank; evapotranspiration in the summertime of 2007 wasalso greater than that of 2006. Some other interesting findings include that soil moisture was much higherat bank edges than vicinity and retained stable in the whole study period; water discharge owned 1-2days response to precipitation and diminished during the arid summertime.
